— Mike Perryman grew up in Manhattan Beach. Like his father, who built homes in the Hollywood Hills, he became a home builder with an eye for modernism as well.

So when Perryman received a tip that a west-facing property on Fisher Avenue was up for sale, he did not hesitate to make an offer and to snatch it up.

Fisher is a small, private street named after one of the area’s earliest settlers, and it’s in a zone that allows structures up to 30 feet high, or three stories. Six months later, he also bought the property next door.

Perryman’s MAP Development tapped San Francisco-based Aidlin Darling Design to work on both 1208 and 1212 Fisher Ave. Because MAP is a spec builder, partner David Darling said the firm was reluctant at first. But after meeting Mike and his wife, Susan, he was convinced that they were passionate about building good-quality homes.

Darling added his firm’s trademark sensibility at 1212 Fisher, a custom three-story that has a modern Pacific Rim feel to it.

The design company works to find solutions for unique situations — in this case, maximizing indoor-outdoor living while preserving privacy in a densely developed beach area.

That’s accomplished by pulling light down into the open spaces with skylights, cathedral light wells and floor-to-ceiling glass sliders. A private courtyard also draws sunlight into the home.

Brazilian ipe wood screens are angled to create privacy from the street side. Freshly planted 10-foot bamboo provides additional privacy on the pool side and separates it from the sister property at 1208 Fisher.

An elevated living room provides views stretching from the Palos Verdes Peninsula to Malibu.
